In the news this week, we came across this drinking water related story regarding Scottish local councils expenditure on bottled water.
Following a Freedom of Information request to all 32 of Scotland’s local councils, it was made public that across Scotland, a total of £2, 835,600 was spent on council buildings and official council functions for water coolers, bottled water and diluting juice over the last three years, with significant expedniture going towards bottled water.
North Lanarkshire council alone managed to spend a whopping £592,179, making it one of the worst offendors. News of the expenditure has led to calls for councils to reduce their spend on bottled water and switch to using more tap water. Nanette Milne MSP, the Conservative Party’s Environment minister; responded to the news by labelling the expenditure on free access drinking water in schools and public places an “obvious area to cut back on”.
The overall figure of expenditure could be even higher, since 12 of the councils asked failed to produce information regarding their expenditure on drinking water.
An option Scottish councils may not have considered would be to use a plumbed in, mains fed water cooler which can be purchased from plumbed in water cooler specialists The Water Cooler Company, and provides an office or public building with filtered, chilled drinking water direct from the building’s water mains, and can save on the cost of buying bottled drinking water.
The Water Cooler Company can deliver and install plumbed in water coolers to addresses throughout the UK.
